15c Mariner wont shift

I have a 15c as a kicker. I pulled the LU because I was getting milky oil, a pressure test revealed a bad shifter boot. I disconnected the linkage but it got hung up on the hole it goes through when I took off the lower unit. I am about to remove the boot but the darn things dosent shift. Did I pull the shift linkage out ? adn if so How do i get it back in?

the mariner is a 15hp and is a 1987 with a threaded lock nut style shift linkage...Any help would be awesome

Fixed it, those of you with a similar problem there is a bracket on the other end of the shift cable. The cable has to be leaned twoards the furthers spot back of thr drive as it can in ot to line up with the bracket.
