Anyone know the secrete to get the plug wires off, trying to take the wire off the coil. Ive pulled really hard on this thing:confused: Do they screw in or something. Don't want to break it.

the wires screw in.
Thanks for the help anyway, but Nope it doesn't on the coil. It's the same as any wire on a car.:p But for as hard as it was to remove it I was thinking it might have screwed in myself. Well after being on there for 34 years I guess that would make it hard.:D

I took the 8 bolts off on top of the flywheel as some of them were already loose to start with.

Man what a pita was going thru cleaning up the motor best I could, also decided to clean all the little ground straps on the bottom pan make sure all were good clean connections and two of the bolts break off just under the #6 plug. I guess I will need to remove this bottom pan now so I can drill them out and re tap or something. Well got this thing this far down not much more to do to get to a point where i could soda blast and repaint it seems to need some attention. I know this motor has seen salt water, can tell by the green and white powder corrosion spots here and there.

More Bad New I guess. Man what a mess Salt water can do to things. I can tell by this that the PO's of this motor didn't do fresh water flushing after boating with this motor. Well good thing I decided to investigate it further.

It was everything I could do to get this Cylinder Block Cover off. I was only able to get two bolts out of the sixteen. The other fourteen were welded to the cover. The cover was like it was welded to the block. It was all I could do to get it separated. Four ears even just crumbled off of it. The gasket is even welded to the block and cover, I swear this cover has never been off in 34 years. If you boat in SALT water Make sure you fresh Water Flush after every use.
Well I did manage to use heat, PB Blaster and a small pipe wrench and ended up getting all but 8 of the broken bolts out. On the last bolt hole left to tap wouldn't ya know the tap breaks off. Well off to find a diamond or hardened carbide Dremel bit to see if I can extract the piece of tap left in the hole.

Oh here's a couple of after pics of the cleanup of all that corrosion. big difference. I used CLR and let it soak then used a small brush and just hosed it off.

Good luck with that I just went through that process on a 85hp 4 cyl., busted 11 bolts out of 12, I found another cover on ebay in excellent shape for $15.00.

That tap is some hard stuff, I tried using a 1/4 inch L/h drill bit on the bolt removal but it didnt seem to make much difference, I,ve heard of people using a wire feed welder and tack welding a new nut on then twisting it out that way but have never tried it, perhaps the dremel will work just fine.

Hey Jim,

when are you planning on soda blasting?

Probably first of this next week. This weekend is my sons graduation party.

Yea the dremel worked it took about an hour to grind it all. Will have to put a helicoil here, But as luck would have it a small piece of it fell back into the bolt hole I am assuming this went somewhere in the water cambering or something. I have no idea where this area feeds too. If anyone knows please let me know I need to find it. Tried getting it with a magnet but it just didn't work. I will probably have to pull the power head now.:(

Re: 1976 Mercury 1150 inline 6

WOW! Pulled the lower unit off last night so I could inspect the water pump and what not. :eek:The mid section and all around the water pump most of the lower unit was stuffed with a rat's nest or something. The mid section was really packed with this thing. I mean stuffed.:D
To my surprise the water pump assembly was in great shape. The main shaft is a bit rusted but I think it will be fine. I need to find a newer used motor bracket. The one on here has some bad corrosion and was almost impossible to lift the motor. I think those assist pistons are worn out. I would really like to find a power trim and tilt bracket. Anyone know where I could find one???:D
Sorry I didn't take any pics it was getting late and I was tired.

OK so I finally got the bigger/real compressor 60 gal Ingersoll Rand. And let me say it does the job on the soda blasting. Here are some more pics of after. This motor is looking a lot better. Make sure you go back to page one and look at some of the before pics. Let me know what y'all think.

So the bb in the carb hose thing; can you just put plugs in the connection holes. Or is the bb thing just an easy way of taking care of the problem? Is it something that you will just never know about after its done? Or are there other things that need to be done to it when putting them in there? Not trying to take over the thread, just get some more info on what has been talked about already.

I have a Merc 1350 135 HP and there is a baffle chamber in the mid section. Mine fell apart over the years and partially blocked the exhaust passage. Had to remove what was left and ran with out it.

Are you still working on the motor?

Re: 1976 Mercury 1150 inline 6

Yes I guess you could say I am still working on it. I just haven't done anything lately. To many other things in life keep coming up and getting into my spending money. You know more important things. But I am still trying to gather parts and stuff I need to move forward.:)
