Hey guys,

Im looking at a boat with the 1991 135 hp blackmax motor on it. Engine seems to run really good. Wanted to ask you all if there are any issues historically with this particular motor that you all know about? This is my first experience with a 2 stroke outboard and would appreciate any and all input.

I think that the 135 is just what was a 150 but is rated at the prop instead of at the power head. The Merc V6 has been around forever and I think the best outboard ever built. If the the motor aint black don't get so far out you can't swim back.

The '91 Merc 135HPV6 is based upon a very sucessful design that was first made in 1978, as a 150HPV6. It is a 2.0L motor, with 3 2bbl carbs. Improvements in electronics were made over the years, and the 150HP motor became 2.4L. The 135HP motor stayed at 2.0L displacement.

I have a 1993 Merc 135HPV6. It is very powerful and reliable. You might check to see if that motor is premix or oil injected. if Oil injected, you might ask whether you want to go to premix.

The V-6 you have is a 90-1/2 version and was made until 1992. There was a version change in 1992 but the 9675 block was still used until at least 1996 so the majority of the parts interchange. Some of them until 2000 and lots them from before 90 fit also. You do have to be careful when you buy used parts but they are plentiful and reasonable.

The carbed 135/150/175 were all 2.0L engines except for some special edition engines and the 150 and above EFI engines which were 2.5L. The 2.4 L engine was a special editon called the Bridgeport.

You have a great engine but I advise you to remove the advance module if it is still equipped and convert it to pre-mix because of it's age. If the oil pump goes and locks up you're looking at a complete teardown. Not that hard but senseless when the preventive measures are so simple.

That little "fat block" 135 (a little underrated) is just about as tuff as they come when ya take care of 'em. It is still used with very few changes. In 2000 they raised the deck height and added o-ring heads along with a lot fancier electronics. So that should tell ya that they were pretty satisfied with the basic motor..............

Your gettin' better but ................
Only 2.0 175 was first generation block '76 ta '81, maybe '82 I think. Tha rest were 2.4's until tha 2.5 came out. They were 2.4 200 chrome bore blocks, vertical front, different tuner, till about late 80's when they changed ta steel and went ta horizontal fronts in '89, '90 and '91. '91 being a "fat" block 2.4. Tha BP along with an oval port block (unpainted 200 chrome bore) came in both a 2.4 and 2.0 motor from tha HiPerf divison so long ago I can't remember when they first came out. Maybe '79 or '80..............

The BP 2.0 came out in 89 as the Hi-po "champboat & SST120" with fingerports and bridged exhaust, the 86-91 2.0 Hi-po had finger ports only. The only 150s in a 2.4 liter are the 88-91 Xr4's and the 150 2.5 liters are 92-05 Xr6 or EFI versions. The 200 BP was offered from 87-91..
