40 hp Mariner Magnum starter and brown wire

I need to study my boat. Starter will only spin now, will never jump up to turn the flywheel. have seen posts about that possibly being a bad ground at battery or on block... i 'll have to check.

second problem/issue. on the top of the engine, there is one brown wire with a quick connect butt joint in it. I believe it isn't normally connected... but my brother connected it when he was trying to figure out why the starter wouldn't start the engine.

anyone got a diagram so i know what this one oddball wire does? I'm at work, but i believe it just goes up near the top of the engine.

Solved starter issue. seems just need to give a shot of oil to the starter gear so it would jump up.
