hi there i'm new to the site :D the problem is with my 65 hp mercury blue band outboard i think its a 1989 model.the motor runs perfectly and the gears but i replaced the gearbox when i first got it and a new impeller but when we started it there was only a little bit of water coming out of the pee hole i took the gearbox off several times and checked the impeller and it was fine and the impeller moves when you put the housing over it also i flushed out the system so there is no blockages and just recently there is just exhaust fumes coming out ??i haven't taken the gearbox off yet though also the wee pin that joins the impeller to the drive shaft was (homemade) it fitted but was stiff (i hammered it in)but the impeller moved none the less. do you think it could be a broken gasket in the housing or maybe a head gasket problem:confused: please help :D

Re: mercury 65 hp problems (help)

Blue bands were a thing of the past in 89, some 65s had thermotats a will fit drve pin on the impeller is flirting with disaster, did you change the gaskets and impeller thats good place to start as impellers get sets in them and don't pump at idle. also serial number would be a great help to know wich cooling system you have. There is no head gasket so thats not the problem.
