I am not a mechanic, but can not afford one either. Any help would be appreciated. :D

I had her out on the water yesterday. I took off from the San Diego Harbor in to big surf. About 1/2 mile out the overheat horn came on. I let it idle thinking it is worse to shut it down and have no cooling water flow through since I could see that the water was indeed flowing through the cloud of white smoke.

Once it was cooled I lifted the motor to see if I picked up some kelp already. No kelp. I took off again. 2 minutes later same issue.

I inspected the prop and it looked like a retain ring was a bit loose. I unbent the remaining tabs, tightened down the nut, and re-bent the tabs. No more issues for the day.

What was happening? Do I need to do anything else?

Unless you were overreving due to prop slipping on shaft I don't think that is what caused the overheat. Do you have a water pressure gauge hooked up anywhere? If not I'd install one.
