I recently purchased a 2001 Ranger with a 2001 Mercury efi on the back of it. Had a lot of power ran real good. I put maybe six hours on it and it cut off on me with no warning buzzer. Upon further inspection it broke the wrist pin and cracked the block wide open. Has anyone heard of this problem or a simular problem in this model of Mercury outboards? And what would be a good price range to get this fixed?

Thanks Danger

Sounds like piston seizure/wrist pin bearing failure and crank snatched wrist pin from piston boss. This is typical of efi as a bad/clogged injector will cause a cylinder to run lean. If it was a weak impeller the other cylinder will be scuffed. Do not install these part on replacement untill you have check and cleaned. A reman powerhead run $3800-5500 depend on supplier

So is this a common thing with the Mercury EFI. Even if i get a new powerhead i could expect this could happen again? How can i prevent this.
