can someone help me set timing on mariner 8hp

I have a mariner 8hp 8M outboard serial no.6T1S036396.I am hoping someone can give me the points and timing settings and procedure to static set the timing.The motor currently will backfire through the carby when pulled over, so i figure the timing is advanced too far.Any help will be appreciated.
