I have a seloc manual for this engine. The manual does not show the location of the thermostat or the poppet valve for this engine. Are there thermostats on each bank of cylinders or just one thermostat. Also where it the poppet valve and are there one or two poppet valves.
Engine serial # is OG541593.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Thermostats are under the cover on each head that has the telltale hose. There is one poppit valve located low on the starboard side of the block, just above where it bolts to the exhaust extension.

I believe that the below diagrams apply to your motor and may help you. Part #7 on the second diagram is the thermostat.

hi Chris,
So you are saying, I must remove the head to get to the thermostat? or is the thermostat on the outside of the head?
Thanks for your reply

You need to remove the two bolts that hold the cover over each thermostat.

Re: Mariner 135 hp - 1997

Chris,
I found the theromstats. I am puzzled as to the location of the poppet valve. Is it on the starboard side when looking at the engine from behind or in front. Can I see the poppet valve ( and get to it)when I remove the engine cover or must I remove a cover to get to it?
Thanks for your help

You can see the poppit valve, but cannot effectively work on it unless you remove the lower cowling. There is a hose that runs from the poppit vlave cover to the top of the block.

Thanks Chris,
One more question. I looked at the lower cowling. There seems to be one bolt under the steering link that holds the lower cowling together. Is this your understanding? Is this hard to remove and put back in place?

Sull, There are more bolts than just one in the front. Look in the back, and I think you will find two more. If I remember there are four bolts, two in front, and two in back. The cowing then slides outward on two pins. I had to pry them a bit.
