Hello and thanks for the great site.

I have a 1985 Mariner 150Hp with Design I, 3 ram power tilt/trim.

Right now it is off the boat and on the bench (I needed to replace the pump+motor, or at least I thought!). It exhibits behavior as follows: trim-tilt up no problem but when coming down it ?binds? at the transition between tilt and trim (meaning, tilt ram is fully down, trim rams still fully extended). The motor make unhappy noise and current goes through the roof; it just does not seem to be getting any fluid to ?pull? the trim rams down. Rams can easily be operated by hand with bypass valve open.

I?ve had the pump fully disassembled without luck.

During desperate research (including iboats) I found what I think is the patent for this system USPAT #4391592:

http://www.google.com/patents?vid=USPAT4391592

This is a pretty good read and has a great schematic for anybody that is interested.

I will carefully go through this, trace fluid flow, and try to troubleshoot the physical system from there.

As I work on this does anybody have ?you should try this first!? suggestions?

Cheers,
