Symptom = After I have been cruising on the lake for a little bit, the engine will, what feels like, slip out of gear and go into idle. It does not rev up. The engine will still be running in idle but it will not go back into gear, forward or reverse until I turn the key off and restart the engine. Then it will go back into gear fine and run for a sec and do it again. It happen much quicker after it had done it the first time.

The fact that I have to restart the engine has me thinking there is a computer or sensor issue. I have very limited knowledge about outboard motors. This is my first boat.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is a 1996 model magnum.

If this was overheating, would it cause that?
