my merc 650 has a key to operate the starter and a black button to choke it. I first check to be sure my primer bulb is firm on my tank, then set my fast idle lever, then turn the key while pushing in the black choke button. When it cranks, I let go of the choke button and let it run for about a minute on fast idle. I then push the fast idle lever down and go about my business.
