I went to change the fuel filter in my 06 115 Optimax. The owners manual says to use a screwdriver between the tabs on the top of the filter. That filter won't break loose and all of the tabs broke off. Anyone else have this problem and how can I get the filter out? There is nothing left to grab on to. I also found on fuel filter tool on E-bay (afterwards), which doesn't do me any good now. It would be nice if Mercury had put that in the manual instead of the screwdriver method.

Re: 115 optimax fuel filter

I have an '06 115 Opti and just changed this filter for the first time. I too wish I had seen this prior to changing mine and ordered the $4 tool first. After breaking all the tabs off the filter I spent the next 3 hours removing the entire vapor separator to chip the rest of the filter out of the top half and reinstalling everything. BUY THE TOOL FIRST BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO REMOVE YOUR FUEL FILTER!!!

Here is what you need

1 - 3/8-16 x 4? Tap Bolt
1 ? 3/8 x 1 ?? Fender Washer
3 ? 3/8-16 Hex Nuts
5 - #8 x 1? Pan head Phillips Sheet Metal

Drill 5 holes through the outside of the fender washer big enough for the screws to fit through.

Put the washer in the top of the filter and mark and predrill holes for the sheet metal screws.

Put the washer onto the tap bolt and tighten down with a nut. Get as tight as you can so the washer won?t spin.

Install the screws through the washer into the filter do not over tighten. Just suck them down tight to the washer.

Install the two nuts onto the tap bolt using the top nut as a lock for the lower nut.

Take a box end wrench and unscrew the filter.

Piece of cake.
