1992 mercury 175 hp outboard tilt/trim

does anyone know how you replace the tilt/trim motor on this particular motor? do you need to remove the motor from the transom? It looks like that is the only way to get at the screws and remove the tilt/trim motor. I have power going to the motor and I smelled the motor and it smells like the tilt motor was burnt Thanks
