I am looking for guidance regarding a steering cable for my 1962 mercury 850. My current steering arm measures looks to be 5/8" diameter and the tube looks to be 1/2". I do not have inside and outside calipers and am trying to measure using crude tools. Does anyone actually know what the diameter of a 1962 Mercury 850 steering tube is? :)

Don't know off hand the specs, but most all late 60, into 70 to the end years, all the same

Re: 1962 Mercury steering tilt tube diameter

you have the same problem i do, mine is a 1957 Mark 75 with the small diameter tilt tube. I also have a 1964 650 Merc with the large diameter tube. To date I have been unable to find a steering cable that will fit the Mark 75 tilt tube.

I know I didn't give you actual measurements, but only confirmed Mercury went to a larger diameter tilt tube sometime after 1957 and before 1964.
