2000 Mercury 225 hp optimax

I have a 2000 225 optimax, 2 months ago, while I was fishing, I started up the engine and went to get on plane, it started knocking, I put it on the trailer and carried it to the local mecury dealer, he advised me that the powerhead was blown, the motor still cranks up and I can slow troll around on the lake, I contacted mercury and they advised me that there was nothing they could do because it is out of warranty. Several months earlier mercury sent a service letter out about some problems that might occur in this model, at the time I had not had any problems with the motor, until now, repairs total almost $6,000.00 dollars that I must pay myself, there should be something that mercury can do to help with this cost, I have owned mercury outboard for years and never had a problem until now.
