It would all depend on the model. I believe the V-6 Black Max's were that way from their start back in the late 70s. But other models changed-over much later and not all at once. Some models never changed and became obsolete in favor of newer generations that did.
Very roughly...if the trim system is between the clamp brackets, BIA pattern. Trim rams outside the clamps, old Merc pattern. Without PT/T, anybody's guess.
