I need to add lanyard kill switch to 40hp Merc with Mercontrol to be "legal" for our fishing club.

I believe I need to ground the orange wire when activating the kill.

This is a 1977 engine, and I guess the Mercontrol is about the same. It has extra pinouts (4 if I recall correctly) in the front where I found a tach signal.

Is one of the pinouts also the "orange" wire for the ignition kill?

Or... any better ideas on how to do this?

Thanks.

the kill lanyard for the old mercontrol with a battery CD type ign actually was a device fitted on the key switch that when pulled rotated the key to the off position. without hunting down my manual I vant remember how wire one in but I think that old system used a normally closed switch and opened the circuit for shutdown. now I am curious and will have to go hunt down my manual.

Tim, the easiest way to add the exterior kill switch to your boat is to add extra wires to the switch box and ground, there is not one at the plug in and you would have to open the box to add a kill wire there

laddies
doesnt that old system use key on 12v to power it up? if you ground the box terminal with the key switch on bad things can happen.
I will have to hunt for my antique manual at lunch

then it sould have a blk/yellow kill wire.
been a long time since I played with the 402 . I would have to find my old mnaual to tell ya where the wires are ya need but bypassing the mercontrol will be the easiest.

Re: Need to add lanyard kill switch to 40hp Merc with Mercontrol

I have had that Mercontrol apart twice in the past... I cussed less last time getting it back together!

So, if I want the cutoff switch to do the same thing the key does when activated, then I want it to...

(1)ground the wire going from the ignition to the limit switch in the photo?

(2)interrupt a 12v ignition wire (I don't think this is right... the "main plug" has come off the motor while running and I had to put it back on to shut it off, so I don't think interrupting the ignition is possible from the Mercontrol.)

Re: Need to add lanyard kill switch to 40hp Merc with Mercontrol

on your keyswitch there should be a terminal E with an orange wire and a terminal D with a black wire.
wire the kill switch so that when the switch is activated(off) the circuit between E and D is complete but normally open for running. if an aftermarket switch is used both terminals may be marked M. it will work then. if your harness is a replacement one it may have a black/yellow wire instead of an orange. the orange wire changes colors at the powerhead connector to brown or blk/yellow depending on the harness and seriel #. if you decide to just add the wires at the powerhead that is possible to. its hard to read this old diagram :) :)

OK, here is a photo of mine... measuring each terminal to ground, this is the only one that changes when the key is switched from off to on to off. I am 99% certain... I just don't want a fire on my right hip!
update... just looked closely, and the wire with the arrows is "E" - I am afraid to push around on them too much... they look very fragile/old!
