Re: Mercury 1997 ELPTO

My personal boat has a 96 ELPTO 115, other than regular water pump impellers it once needed a voltage regulator/rectifier.

PRIOR to purchasing ANY outboard.....

Take along a couple of tools
spark plug wrench
variable gap spark tester
compression tester
remote starter button
jumper cables

Remove the spark plugs and look at them to see how well the burn is

Rig the jumper cables and starter button, attach the spark tester, test compression and observe the spark.

If the engine has good spark and even compression of 120 psi or better then you can be sure that the motor and ignition is in good condition.

Carbs can be cleaned, gear oil changed, impeller changed and you should have a reliable engine.

I have a 1999 version of same motor I bought about a year ago. Had some carburetor issues that recently solved, not really specific to the motor, the ethanol is cause. It is good basic motor IMO.
