Seems to me the Mercury got some problems, I have a brand new engine with less than 20 hours, and the oil warning came on. mech found the gear that drives the oil injection pump stripped out. Why the hell have a metal drive shaft and a plastic planatary gear?? Very poor design as well as I like Mercury. I am going to take the pump off and put the oil in the gas tank as labor to put this gear in is over 400 bucks. any thoughts on this modification.

The reason the the oil drive gear is plastic is so if it does fail it will not damage the cylinders. If it was metal and a tooth broke off it could cause the engine to fail. Have you contacted Mercury for help?
