1979 40hp Mercury outboard won't turn off when turning key to off position. Starts and runs fine. Replaced ignition switch (3 position switch off-on-start) and it didn't fix problem. Only way to stop motor now is to pull emergency switch cord.

G'Day Did you replace the ignition switch with an outboard switch or an auto switch. The outboard switch shorts the ignition system to stop the motor an auto switch will not.

Whaley,

The replacement switch I used was the one listed in the Mercury parts manual for my boat motor (40 HP). Any other suggestions for getting the motor to stop?

G'Day. If the motor is switching off with the lanyard switch on the control box then the problem can only be a faulty ignition switch, or you have wired it in incorrectly
