Hi All,

Bought this one real cheap as spare incl all the internals in pretty good condition. Is there a way to check if its geometry is still intact before undertaking any welding works? I can't see anything wrong with it in the pictures below but guess it's a fraction of a millimetre that may matter here because of the gear backlash...

Many thanks in advance!

wouldnt matter if the unit is bent or not, by the time you weld up that giant smashed in gash in the nose, the casting will pull like a potato chip.

What if I only weld up the hole in the tube and the end of the fin like this:

I'm only going to use this LU as spare one, so it doesn't really matter what its shape is like. My current one is still in perfect working order and I just needed another one to be sure that whatever happens to it I'll be back on water as soon as I swap it out.

Too bad the last owner used it as a "curb finder"..Good luck.

Well if he wasn't so unfortunate I wouldn't be so fortunate to buy the full kit in pretty decent condition (ex gearcase itself) + 2 propellers + starter for ~$333: it's a real gift in my home country as even badly used LU assemblies cost at least 50% more than that. Sadly it's not uncommon to hit something underwater as he did, and not using the boat at all is the only way to avoid it really. Hence the idea to have a spare LU. I'll have to have the welding done for me though, as I can't do it myself. Fortunately it's relatively inexpensive in my area.

All the welding needed to make it well again won?t be quick and it still might be distorted enough cause binding and/or not seal. A new housing is not too expensive. Put it on your engine and call the insurance company about the rock bed you hit

I'm actually monitoring a used gearcase in a different advert - might buy it then. Was just hoping to avoid relatively expensive gear backlash adjustments.
