Swapping to long foot?

I have a 1996 sunbird 17' bow rider with a 70hp Johnson that seized up. The 70 has a long foot. My Dad has a 50HP 1978 Mercury but it is a short shaft with all of the controls.

What can I do to make the 50HP work?

sort of an easy conversion

sell short shaft mercury and controles, convert motor to small amount of cash
sell broken johnson for parts, convert parts to small amount of cash
take both small amounts of cash, put on table in pile
take wallet, empty contents onto table, making slightly larger pile of cash
take pile of cash, buy another used Johnson of same vintage and shaft length (converting cash to a motor)
install motor, go boating.
