I need some help everyone .. my 77 Mercury has a gas leak .. I didn't notice it until I tried putting it in the lake and when I shifted in gear it just shut off.. no sputter or rough shut down .. it just shut off.......any ways I'm trying to find the serial # on said outboard to order parts to try to fix the gas leak but I can't find any serial #'s any where.. where can I look to find it?.... and would the gas leak be the reason it dies immediately when put in gear?

You have a face plate on the front of your motor. Approximately 12 " below the knob on the faceplate you should find the serial number on the main pivot. It is easiest to see when the motor is in the fully down running position.

Gas leak is common in the fuel pump. I would look there first. Second common place for fuel leak is carb overflow.

Those motors often stall when put into gear, if carbs are not spotless, and idle mixture and RPM are not spot on. Fix the fuel leak first....
