Here are a couple of pictures of a connecting rod from the top cylinder of my 2001 mercury 40 hp elpto. Do you think it is ok to use or should it be replaced? The scarring is not detectable with a fingertip, but you can feel a little resistance if you use the edge of a penny and pull it across the area on the edge of the rod.

James, if you made it this far you should replace it, if you have the money and you do.
Is the crank shaft ok? A shop can polish it for you.
What happened for you to tear your motor apart?
Are you stopping short James? Should you remove everything, hone the cylinders, new rings, rebore the cylinder(s)/rebuild it.In the correct order.
New head gasket.
Factory service manual.

Ok, I will attempt to locate a replacement. The crankshaft appears to be ok. The top caged bearing cane apart which locked up the engine is the reason I tore into it. Here is a pic of the cleaned up crankshaft.
