Last weekend my port engine blew a hole in the side of the block. I have been searching for a powerhead and cannot find one. Its a 1993 manf date CXL 135 2.5L serial # 0G001404.
I called Crowley, Mercury reman., and OBParts all stating there are none in stock.

To repower with controls is 24K with twin 135s. It may be the death of the boat. Any suggestions? image_248499.jpg

I had thought the 135HP V6 motors were 2.0L. I know they were 2.0 L, at least up to 1993.

Anyway, those blocks were very popular, I am surprised you cannot find one. Perhaps you could substitute a 2.5L 150HP block instead.

Now they want the Block casting number. The motor serial leads to a 2.5L which is scarce, but Im being told it could be a 2.0 so to put that aside they want the casting number. I was thinking the same lines as a 2.5L 150 block but I mentioned that to Mercury and Crowely and they stated no. Did not give a reason. So now I have to run up to the lake and try to find the block casting number to move forwards.
I fear my boating fishing season is now closed...

The made a 2L that looks like a 2.5 block ...we call them fat blocks. You can use a 135/150 powerhead from 1993 and up

I guess the question is how to ID the motor? Is it a 2.0 or a 2.5? Reman shops and mercury are saying it's a 2.5L which are unavailable carb. Only injection available.

mercury site DOES say its a CXL 2.5??? ................. something I've never seen myself!

that should make it (block assy. only) same as 150 efi and XR6 probably..

those are the only 2.5 150's I've ever seen and/or heard of... till mid 2000's and opti's!

So your saying Duke, it's a 2.5L 135 hp. The original cowling on both motors state 2.0 on the side. So Mercury just put together whatever they had a surplus of? Thats why I was questioning what Mercury Reman amd others stated with doubt.

I'm going to drive 1000 miles one way and pick up a motor from Craigslist owner. He did compression test. All 6 cyl at 105. It's on a stand and he will start and run on muffs. Throw it in the truck and go home. Oh it's in Louisiana so I have to get a Poorboy and a bowl of Gumbo, then head home. Kind of aggressive move for an old man bit I'm gonna do it!
It's a 1992 135 hp. What Litre is it? Haha I have no idea. Here's the serial he sent me.

A block is out there, you have all winter to find it online, never give up.
Replace it with a 9.9 kicker?
Replace it with a used Force 125 or other.

that number is a 2.0 "fat block" 135.....

and yep, MERCURY MARINE (Brunswick.com) list your motor as a 2.5 135 CXL!.. been in tha middle of tha merc/mariner V6 stuff only, from tha very first 1750 till early 2000's... thought I owned, built and/or had in than shop justa 'bout every combination they built, production and high performance (some that folks say merc never built) and have never ran across a 2.5 135 rated non-opti American sold motor.... but it's merc we're talkin' 'bout sooooo anything is possible!

if ya have a chance, jus because, pull one of tha heads on yours outta curiosity.....? 3 1/8 or 3 1/2?

good luck on your "venture"..........

GOOD NEWS: I found a 1992 replacement motor in Baton Rouge LA on craigslist Thursday night. Made a trip to perch fish Friday am got our 90 fish and headed to LA. Drove non stop 16 hrs and arrived in Gator Country. Ran motor, everything looked good. Few very nice young men helped me load and off I went for GUMBO and POBOY... LOL . Another 17 hrs straight arrived at marina with the sacred 135.

This motor I believe is a 2.0. I will need to change the foot to make it a CXL motor. Now I must get some rest.

Sometimes you just have to squeeze every minute out of life to make help make things happen...

ya gotta pull bad power head first ta start with no mater what.. use that part as a "learnin' experience" for pullin'/install of new (to you) one.. after you get old power head removed pull lower unit and install a "complete new, oem water pump kit"... put gear case back on old down housin' before you install newer power head... jan.. be sure to disconnect tha shift shaft at tha anchor bracket before liftin' tha bad power head off!!!

Gee, I would check to see if the cowls swap, so the motors look the same. They are twins right?

if so, pull the motor and swap it out. It is only 4 bolts, versus a lot more, plus gaskets hoses etc. You will need to d/c the steering, but that ain't hard.

Either way you need to disconnect the electrical, fuel, trim and other components. I also pull the gearcase before pulling the powerhead anyway, as it makes it a lot easier not to strip the driveshaft splines.
