which outboard would you buy? $500 for 2011 Mercury 8hp with 150 hours use on a sail boat or $1100 for 2004 Mercury 8hp 10 hours (electric start) used as a kicker motor of a power boat

Are they both the same model? Merc did make some engines specifically for sailboats

Don't think so but would not know yet. What's the difference between the one for sail boat vs power boat? Please elaborate, thx

Sailboat engines were often a very long shaft. Propellers were often larger dia, and were combined will higher ratio gears. If the engine used a thru -hub exhuast some sailboat props were designed in a way that the exhaust wouldn't get in the prop blades while in reverse. In addition some sailboat engines had slightly different control.
My point was/is make sure you are comparing engines that are the same, not just the same hp

if both motors are identical, the newer one for less money. 150 hours is a season of use

No they are not identical model. The 2011 motor is manual pull and the 2005 was an electric start. I bought the $500 2011 mercury 8hp 4 cycle. It was used on a sail boat. The owner sold the boat last year, and finally got around to sell the outboard this year. Was lying in the garage for 2017. It was not even use at all for this year. I will try to start it this weekend and take it out on my big boat for a quick spin. Just need to buy a kicker motor stand for my big boat 1974 wellcraft airs lot 165 sport.

See pictures of the 2 mercury 8 hp motors - here shows the $500 2011 motor

This 2005 mercury 8 hp electric start is still for sale. Go grab it before it is gone. I just don't have the money for it.

I will use mine for trolling to save gas instead of using my Johnson 90 hp (2 cycles) to troll for stripe bass. I will also use it where the lake or water limit motor use to 9.9hp.

mercury 8 hp outboard model # is 1F08211FK and it is a manual pull core start, long shaft. and called the Mercury help line to confirm the serial # is for 2011 year. 4 cycle. Now just need to keep my fingers crossed that it will run when I hook it up with gas and oil.
