So I'm to the point of bolting my rebuilt upper unit to the driveshaft housing, and things just feel wrong.

The service manual calls 45 ft/lb in three steps on these skinny 8mm bolts. It can't possibly be this high can it? I was brave enough to get to 20 ft/lbs, and the one I tried to go further, feels like its pulling the threads out of the block.

Anyone done this on these outboards? I'm really feeling like 20 ft/lbs is more than plenty.

My Mercury manual shows 180 inch lbs. or 15 ft. lbs (I wouldn't use a ft. lb wrench that low)
I'm not sure my manual is the right one for yours.

What's your serial number and how many cylinders and carbs?

Also, what manual do you have?

That sounds much more reasonable. SN: 0B154267 Manual: 90-13645--2.

I doubt I'm the first one to have run into this lol.

Yea, that torque is dangerously high. Someone who didn't know better would destroy their block. Thanks for reaffirming that the listed torque is incorrect.
