Mystery Floating Metal Ring Top of Shaft Housing

MERCURY 2005 150L 150H V6 OPTI. Replaced impeller, drive shaft will not reinsert due to metal ring floating at top of drive shaft housing. Other owners have used long items to apply grease to keep in place and inserted shaft. I want to know what I should do. If I need to fix can it be done by removing drive shaft/exhaust housing? Thank you!

Uh oh.......thats the driveshaft seal carrier.Will need to pull powerhead and reinstall with Loctite.
