What is this broken tube for? 2001 mercury Bigfoot 50hp

Can't tell where this is supposed to connect or what it's for, but it is clearly broken.

The tube is for the speedometer. If you have a speedo, trace the tube back to the transom or look around the transom for a disconnected/broken tube.

That will do it. If and when you replace the tube from the lower unit to the transom, clean out the fitting down to the opening in the leading edge of the L/U. Debris and crud have a way of blocking it.

Defo speedo as mentioned....most likely broken because many have it cable tied too tight along the attachments. Most often broken when replacing the steering arm rod and associated, as it usually gets attached to this before running into the boat. If it's too tight, as soon as you trim or tilt the engine it snaps.....speaking from mistakes made....haha.
