Is my motor charging up the battery while I drive around or is this something that newer motors do? Can I see it charge with a meter?

A motor from just about any era can charge a motor, it just depends on if it has a charging system and if it's in working condition.

Most electric start motors have a charging system, it may not put out many amps, but it will charge.

Measure your voltage at the battery prior to starting the motor, then measure with the motor running, as the RPMs increase so should the voltage.

If all the systems are functional, Your alternator is charging or the stator charges, depending on which you have.

If the motor is electric start, remote control then it should charge the battery.-----Up to you to check voltage on battery with motor at fast idle.---Should read about 14 volts.
