1996 115 hp mercury outboard

hi i have a 1996 115 hp/jet 80 mercury outboard and I'd like to do a lower unit swap for a traditional prop drive lower unit gearcase. Does anyone know what years and models have a lower unit that will match up without too much trouble?

SEI probably makes a replacement gearcase for that motor. It is brand new, and likely just a few more $ than used.

I have an SEI lower on mine and it works great, but the water pump impeller was crap. Completely destroyed itself with only 10 hours of use and almost ruined my engine.

You will need a pre 1996 lower from a 75-125hp motor as these had the 3 jaw clutch. In 1997 Merc changed the gears and dog and shift rod. If you use a SEI unit you will need to replace shift shaft.

Yup. Trying to find a pre 96 3 jaw lower unit that was in good shape was hard, So just changed out the shift saft to a 6 jaw. Wasn't two difficult but required removing the power head.

SEI provided all the information, plus their lower units have a no fault 3 year warranty.

so i've got a guy here local that has a lower unit off of a 89 would that work?
