Check your thermostat for a stuck open condition. It could be running extra rich explaining the fuel smell and a lot of the oil rise is actually water from running too cold.
Thank you that gives me something else to check. I also noticed it does not want to take gas at wot that's why I was under the cowl in the first place.
When the crankcase is overfull due to gas, it's not uncommon for the motor to run poorly.
The thermostat is a common cause, so can running it at low RPMs for extended periods of times, it can prevent it from getting up to operating temperature.
If fuel injected check the fuel pressure regulator. Another common issue is "lugging" the engine as would be the case with a prop with too much pitch. Yet another issue is prolonged idling or trolling followed by never giving the engine a chance to run wide open for awhile to get warm enough to burn off the excess fuel.
