I have water getting into my motor/exhaust when testing it in a barrel. When I pull the lower unit it is full of milkey sludge. I did some work on my motor over the winter. I replace the gasket between the powerhead and exhaust. My guess is it's not dealing? Thoughts.

Does it look dramatically different from before you did the work? Water is supposed to get into the exhaust. That's what outboards do . . . .

It didn't have any of the milkey stuff before. Always was clean.

Nothing ever ran out of the prop. At least other than water.

It could just be picking up oil in the water from the exhaust and recirculating it creating a whipped oil/water effect.

I def am getting water into my lower unit. At the end of the season last year I noticed it and refilled with new oil. I was hoping that it was just a bad gasket on the drain and vent plug. But I guess not. Here is a pic of my lower unit oil and the gasket I had replaced (referenced in initial post)

Those would be two separate issues. The lower unit oil is (or should be) completely isolated from the engine oil. Looks like that base gasket isn't sealing

Would there be any issues using the oem gasket and some permatex combined? I really don't want to keep pulling this thing off.

No expert here, but I always thought that water in the bottom end gear box could be a result of the O-rings and seals on the propeller shaft assembly going bad. Would let oil out, but also water in when submerged.

Here's a photo of my Merc 50hp prop shaft / gear assembly. Note main o-ring. If this ring is bad, it would allow oil out and water in to the bottom end.

I believe I do have a bad seal on my prop shaft. Any thoughts on how to get the gasket between my power head and exhaust extension to seal (picture on page 1)?

The manual for my 1982 50hp doesn't mention using an adhesive on the gasket.
I'm not sure what you're working on.
