Hi all. I'm heading to checkout a 135 tomorrow to replace my 1975 Chrysler 135.

Any special things I should look for beyond compression readings, cooling flow etc?

I'm familiar with two strokes, but not this particular engine. They have a good reputation it seems.

Thanks,

Chay

My buddy has one. Was a good motor but the oiling system failed and damaged two cylinders. He got it rebuilt and now it's a good motor again.

A 1990 135HP Merc will be a 2.0L 60* V6 engine. They are a proven design. A compression check and inspection of the gear oil would be the most important checks. Plan to rebuild the waterpump. If she does not idle well, plan to clean and rebuild the three carbs.

I know of no chronic defects with the Merc V6 motors.

That is very interesting. I did research and find out about the two block sizes, 2.0 and 2.4 I think it was. Also that the 2.0 is also the 150 for some years, so It's no working too hard for the 135 hp.

Thanks for the advice. I hope the purchase works out so I can get back on the water.

The 135 is a very durable and reliable engine and, very good on gas.
The 2 liter block was introduced in 1975 for the 76 model year as a 175, in 78 it was also as the basis for the 150. In 1982 when mercury switched to prop rating there was only one 2 liter engine the 150. In 1986 the 135 was introduced. A prop rated 135 is going to be around the same power as the crank rated 150. You will see at least a 4 mph improvement with the merc, even more if your chrysler did not have power trim
