Mercury 35hp serial numbers

I recently purchased a 1989 pontoon with a Mercury 35hp engine. I am having a problem with the serial number. The tag on the transom bracket has serial number A186100. Everywhere I have checked does not show this number existing. Please help!!

I checked the Mercury marine official parts site and that serial number comes up as Mercury 35hp.

I see serial info linked in this format often. Where do you go to get this info?

Add a zero in front of the serial number it's a mercury thing for their computer system.

I use www.maxrules.com for my merc serial #s. They have one of the best sites and have the canadian #s. The Mercury marine website only goes back to the mid 80s. 1985 models may or may not show up there.
