Plan fully restoring a 2 strokes Merc 200 HP Black Max Autolube OB. It's the 6 Cylinder carbed version. This OB was stopped 2 years ago and has been siting since.

Plan to tear powerhead down, clean all water paths, decarboize head pistons and cylinder head, clean all 6 carbs, change all gaskets, impeller, lower leg gear oil. Was wondering if this model is a reliable one, what to look after or if having some sort of technical issues to be aware of. This OB is at least 35 years old.

Does somebody knows the factory min-max wot rpm range for this OB ?

What year??? If it has the in boat Autolube loose it quick.Do a compression test first as if it has damaged cylinders its not worth fixing. These models are 2.4 chrome bore blocks and expensive to repair as only option is re plate or sleeve.

Thanks,

Impossible to know year of fabrication. The engine was working fine when owner stopped using it, needs a complete restoration to much time sitting down, will check compression if pistons can turn freely. Would you say that being 2.4 chrome blocks, won't be able to rebore to next size piston in case it's needed ?

You cannot bore chomre oversize as its a chrome plated aluminum cylinder. If damaged it can only be repaired by installing a sleeve or have cylinder replated.

Sitting for 2 years doesn't mean it needs a complete rebuild, you don't even know if the carbs are dirty yet. Do as little work on it as possible and see if it will start, make sure of what needs to be done prior to starting any major work.

Thanks, but restoration it's not necessarily a complete rebuilt say tearing complete powerhead down. This OB was bought second hand along boat, has never been water flushed during its entire life while running on salt water. Will undergo same restoration as my 18, a trouble free OB is needed for this coming 2017 summer and subsequent ones.

They were good motors, the local guides used them for years without too many issues.
