Hello all. I have looked everywhere, and can't find info on how to rope start my 35hp Merc. The other day my battery which is prolly due to be replaced died on me and I had to row until I found someone to help jump my motor. However I know that when I first bought the boat the motor came with a piece of rope inside part of the housing to rope start it. I have watched a video on youtube with a guy doing it to a newer yamaha, so I understand the principle, but if anybody can provide link or some further info on how to do it to a mercury outboard like mine that be great. Thanks in advance for your time.

Use to need to do this on an outboard, so remove the cowling and look at the flywheel. If there is a place to put a rope on it, you will see a knot slot. If there is no knot slot then it was not designed to start with a rope.

Take a pic of the top of your flywheel
