I am working on a friends outboard getting
it ready for summer.. I have put several water pump kits in
it over the past 20 yrs +..BUT.. it has never seemed to pee
very hard and does run warmer than it used to when he got it
originally.. talking to him the other day he told me that
when he first got the boat and the builder took him out they
had fired it up OUT OF WATER and RAN it for some time before
putting it into the water.. obviously we both know what
happened FAST.... of course my friend had to have a new
water pump installed because of overheating back then before I got involved with it. .... my
question is ?? thinking about this after talking to him and
hearing this could it be possible for a piece of the
ORIGINAL impeller have broken off and got up into the water
tube and blocked it some ? or up into the powerhead somehow
and it still might be in there ? we have taken the boat out
every summer and it runs just fine and DOES pump water decently, but I know from my other Mercury outboards that I have owned that they are high pressure pumps, it
has always seemed to run warmer ( on the gauge ) than
it first did when he got it.. have changed the sending unit,
and have changed the thermostats ( I drilled small holes in
them so I could tell it was pissing when it was cold ) just
wanted a expert opinion about the possibility of this
happening ? easy enough to pull the lower unit and blow up
the water tube with air to see ? pull the thermostats to
open it up ? Guy Loehr ... guyloehr@sbcglobal.net

Check the poppit valve. Maybe it needs to be rebuilt. Normal Water pressure is probably only about 7 PSI at cruising speed.

hi there.. another year and doing another service to get ready for summer... and yes, I did replace the poppet valve as water was dripping out of the weep hole... still kinda the same water flow wise.... was curious IF anybody has seen pieces get lodged anywhere upstream from the pump and cause water flow problems that way ?? thinking that I may drop the lower unit and replace the impeller for drill as usual and if I do should I look for anything that might be blocking the water tube ?? can I pull the stats out and verify good flow and no blockage that way ? thanks, guy
