I rewired my '73 9.8hp with 18 gauge from CDI electronics in Alabama. That company also rebuilt the ignition module and sold me new charge coils...only the points and capacitor were still good. Mine runs but I have to check timing and rpm. I had it out on the river but my boat ( 14' aluminum Grumman) is about 600 pounds and it is slow. I have a '72 Johnson 25hp on it and it is still pretty slow.
The wire they sold me is enough to handle the high voltages of the Phasemaker ignition. You can troubleshoot your system at CDI's site.
