What is this?

I was wondering if someone could help me identify the black tube shown in the picture. The motor is a 2002 Mercury Saltwater series 200hp. While down at the slip this evening I noticed that this tube was disconnected. At first glance it looked like a wire, but I found that it was a thin diameter tube. My thought it that has something to do with the water flowing to the tell-tale. I am assuming that the coupling is there to disconnect when removing the lower unit. It seems as though the tubing has slid out of the coupling.

Perhaps it is something to do with a speedometer.

Thanks for the replies. I did not think about that, and it makes sense because the speedometer does not work.
