1973 mercury 1500 power trim not working

i have a 1973 mercury 1500 on a 1973 sidewinder the power trim motor comes on when I press the button but it does noting to my outboard. this is my first outboard with power trim so I don't want to just start guessing. I also know where a 1978 mercury 1150 with everything that has a bad cylinder would this engine wiring be the same. thank you.

The PTT units on your '73 and that '78 should be the same. See if you an lift your motor to trim it, while running the pump. Lock it up and refill the reservoir. Originally the PTT unit took 5W-30 motor oil, but some changed it to Dextron ATF. Refill with whatever you have already in there. After it starts to work, you may need to bleed the trim cylinders.

Is there a knob on the bottom of the pump unit?------Manual release that needs to be closed ?
