My #110 1982 9.8 reverse clamp doesn't always unlatch when you go back into forward..is there suppose to be a spring on the clamp to help this and is there some kind of a rod keeper to keep the rod in the clamp slot. I can't seem to find any drawings of this assembly to look at

Hip shot. Been a very very long time. Yes on the spring and when you manually disengage it, it is lifted out of the way. As I recall it may only connect in reverse but don't quote me on that. Reason being is in F especially if you hit something you want the engine to rise over it and drop back down and in N you may want to tilt the engine up for beaching or fishing or whatever.
