No the propshaft and the reverse gear can be removed without dropping the gearcase. There are some parts in the front of the propshaft that may fall out as you remove it.

Gee, why would you not want to remove the gearcase and put it on the bench for repair.

Just wondering...

I have never worked on boat motor before. I did not want to get involved any more than I have to. Shaft is twisted. Thank u for help I might be getting in to more than I can handle already but cant afford to take to shop

I have a manual. Serial number is 5004367. I think I have the r model can anyone confirm

Screwdriver. there are two seals, remember to install them back to back

thare is a 2 inch by 1/2 diameter steel rod pointed on one end. in shaft on clutch side. will it pull out?
