During winterization of my 2000 Mercury 175 EFI I went to put the spark plug back in after placing the 2 stroke oil in the cylinder and one of the spark plugs would not go in. I looked at the hole in the block and it looks like 2 threads a 1/4 of the way into the hole are stripped. I took electrical tape and sealed off the plug hole so nothing would go inside but I want to fix it before the winter. I was wondering if there is a tool that can be used to re thread the hole rather than using a hex coil.

You can cut an old spark plug lengthwise to make it a thread chaser, but seriously, with threads stripped, the hole is now weakened and really needs to have a spark plug fitting installed. JMHO!

I have used the solid-type spark plug insert in the past. The head would need to be removed, drilled and tapped for the insert.

I have used this: Draper Expert M14 X 1.25 Spark Plug Helicoil Thread Repair Kit 44086 and since you have some thread left it will cut new ones easily.

I will consider a helicoil, but first I want to see if I can "correct" the one threat that is messed up.

I had this happen on an old Johnson 60hp. I just pulled the head off and had helicoils put in. I have been told that they use helicoils on aircraft engines when they are first built. I can see that this would be beneficial since the thermal expansion coeficient would match.

I was gonna say, if you have to pull the head, you may as well just put a new one on, but they are $478.00!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
