2003 Mercury 60 HP with gas in oil tank

Would appreciate suggestions - filled gas tank before going to lake - ran out on lake until stopped to swim - could not get it started and had to be towed in - checked the connections in the fuel line and tightened them - still no joy - checked this am and gas has diluted the oil in the oil tank reservoir. where do I begin? never happened before. Thanks in advance.

Please clarify, is this an oil injected 2 stroke engine with gas in the oil reservoir?

Or a 4 stroke engine, with oil in the crankcase?

carburated ?? or fuel injected??
