Anyone know what the recommended max rpm for a 1980 mercury 150 is? I'm wanting to get a ssh prop but need to know what rpm I need to keep my outboard under. My tech works but the boat is a 1990 and motor is a 1980 so I don't know if the guage red line would apply the same way

The tachometers for Mercs are pretty universal. Your's probably will read correctly, provided it is set correctly and wired correctly. They usually don't have a red line on them.

Recommended WOT range is 5000-5500 RPM, for non-high performance models, likely like yours.

Those two-stroke engines are happiest when turning near max RPM's. I agree with Mr. Chris 1956 Under 5500 is where you want to be.
