1980-81 Mercury reverse hook rod install

I have an old 18hp Merc that needed an impeller so I thought I would give it a try, since I have never worked on an outboard. I removed the shift rod retainer and ended up with the reverse shift rod basically floating in the cylinder which the shift rod was removed. Any suggestions on where I can find instructions as to how the reverse hook rod is re-installed as I connect the shift rod retainer. I have tried YouTube and searched the net extensively. Thanks!
