I recently had to remove the lower unit on my 1995 Mariner 9.9 in order to repair and replace the impeller and impeller components. While that part has gone OK, I am now re-installing the lower unit and for some reason the shift shaft is lining back up with the pin like it did before. My guess is that I re-installed the shift shaft incorrectly and perhaps didn't put the cam at the bottom on properly but could certaintly benefit from someones expertise.

The diagram below shows the shift shaft and the cam at the bottom that screws on. I screwed it all the way on and I am thinking thats my problem but I could be way off.

Thank you!

one other thing the pin needs to go through the hole in the top of the shift shaft when you put it back together its in a different gear

Put the shift handle and the sift rod both into forward gear.
