Hi, all. I'm having an issue with my Mercruiser 120 carb and a high idle. It is a 1984. I don't have the serial number with me at work. Sorry - I can post it later. I've done a few searches and haven't really found my exact issue. At start up, the boat will idle at 8-900 RPM. If I put the boat in gear or rev the engine out of gear, the idle will not return back to it's normal 8-900 position. It runs at about 11-1300 RPM. I can push the linkage on the carb to make it return to normal, but it will not do it on it's own. When pushing the linkage, there is no resistance and it is easy to do - not forcing anything. The return set screw on the stop at the low idle, but not at the higher idle until I push it down. This happens when the engine is warm and cold, so I don't think it is a choke issue. This also causes the engagement of the gears to be harsh and a decent "clunk". Almost like the engine interrupter switch (or what ever it's called) isn't working correctly. It will cut the engine in manually pressed. I have tried to adjust the shift linkages, I know the distributor is clean and functioning properly. It runs good and is timed correctly. I'm at a loss. I was thinking or adding some sort of return spring, but I know that doesn't really solve the actual problem, but may get me the desired results. Thank you and help is appreciated.

Welcome to iboats

Try taking the the throttle cable off the linkage and moving the linkage on the carb by hand to see if it pops back to idle. It could be that your thottle cable is getting in a bind or wore out.

BTW - I have a return spring on my 4 barrel carb, so it pops back to idle. Not sure if you are sopposed to have one but i would think so.

Thank you for the responses. I will give both of those a try and let you know how I works out. Forgot the 120//140 were basically the same - maybe should have broadened my search.

disconnect the throttle cable, set the idle speed, adjust throttle cable to fit plus 2 turns tighter ,putting slight pressure to force it against the stop

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,.... No need for any springs,.... Just follow BD's instructions,.... works for all throttle cables,....

Thanks for the replies. I adjusted the throttle cable and it solved the issue. Never would have thought of that. Thank you for the help. I appreciate it. Safe travels everyone!

Another note, shift interrupter should only engage when boat is in the water under load.
